17 MARCH 2000

OIL SEED RAPE

The crop to be grown in 2000 is an oil seed rape hybrid line containing the transformation event, Ms8/Rf3 developed by Aventis (formerly AgrEvo) which has been genetically modified to be tolerant to glufosinate ammonium herbicide (known as Liberty®). It will be grown in accordance with a research consent (Part B),
number 98/R19/18 issued in March 1999 and covering both England and Scotland. It will be compared with conventional varieties of spring sown oil seed rape.

Consents are issued on advice from ACRE. This and other herbicide tolerant oil seed rapes are being considered for Europe wide cultivation as follows:

AgrEvo (Aventis) ref: C/B/96/01 through the Belgian authorities

AgrEvo (Aventis) ref: C/DE/96/5 through the German authorities

a.accepted as suitable by the independent researchers conducting the monitoring; and
b.where farmers and industry have reached an agreement to carry out the growing of these crops.

More sites are under consideration and as further agreements are reached additional site locations will be notified (and included on the DETR Website).

FORAGE MAIZE

The crop to be grown in 2000 is a hybrid line containing the transformation event T25 developed by Aventis (formerly AgrEvo) which has been genetically modified to be tolerant to the herbicide glufosinate ammonium (known as Liberty®). It will be grown in accordance with a marketing consent (Part C), number C/F/95/12/7 issued by the French Authorities in August 1998, following agreement by Member States. This consent is valid throughout the European Union.

It will be compared with equivalent forage maize grown conventionally. Sowing is expected to begin late April and May.

Under this consent there is no requirement to notify the authorities of intention to grow this crop. However SCIMAC have provided the following list of proposed sites. These have been:

a) accepted as suitable by the independent researchers conducting the monitoring; and

b) where farmers and industry have reached an agreement to carry out the growing of these crops.

More sites are under consideration and as further agreements are reached, SCIMAC have agreed to provide the additional site locations for inclusion on the DETR Website.

They are sugar beet line 77 grown under a research consent (Part B), reference 99/R22/16 issued in March 2000 for growing in England only and fodder beet line A5/15 grown under a research consent (Part B), reference 99/R22/17 issued in March 2000 for growing in England only.

Consents were issued on advice from ACRE. Fodder beet is being considered for EU wide cultivation under application C/DK/97/01 through the Danish competent authority.

The following list of proposed sites includes those locations that have been:

a.accepted as suitable by the independent researchers conducting the monitoring; and
b.where farmers and industry have reached an agreement to carry out the growing of these crops.

More sites are under consideration and as further agreements are reached additional site locations will be notified (and included on the DETR Website).
